TGIF.

It's been a long week. Let these links help you celebrate the fact that it's Friday!

{Photo taken last weekend, on a blackberry picking jaunt around Tooting Bec. Peter made blackberry and apple gin, and I made a tiny pot of jam – recipe coming on Monday!}

Good lord, this has been a long week. I think it’s made a little bit worse because last weekend was so great. The sun was out, Theo slept through the night for three nights in a row, we were out every day in the park… and then this week was… almost the opposite! It has been nearly constant rain all week, meaning we were cooped up indoors a lot, and Theo has decided that he no longer wants to sleep during the day or at night. Every bed time is a massive struggle. On Wednesday it took us over two hours to get him down in the evening, when it usually takes 10 minutes MAX. In the end we had to give him some calpol (I can see where a tooth is coming through), and just leave him to cry. It was awful but nothing we tried was working, and I wanted to stay and hold him forever, but I think my presence was doing more harm than good. Yesterday was a lot better, thank God, but I’m still feeling a bit upset about it.

But! It’s the weekend, and a long weekend at that. Hurrah! Regardless of whether things are going well or not, it makes all the difference in the world having Peter around during the day. He’s such a calm person. When I’m freaking out saying “I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO! I AM AN AWFUL MOTHER!” He’ll just be like, “Sit down, take a breath. No you’re not.” It doesn’t generally actually calm me down at all (sorry Peter), but I massively appreciate the thought. Today he’s not at work, so I’ll have a few hours to myself to pop into town and have lunch with a friend. Yay.

How was your week? Hopefully a bit cheerier! Here are a few things that have been brightening up my days…

I got paid again this month! I was fully convinced that my maternity leave pay had run out, but I got a tiny paycheque of maternity pay plus a little boost from the two keeping in touch days I’ve worked. So that’s something positive from this week!

  • This Chrome extension makes Facebook so much slicker. It’s still Facebook, but at least it’s less offensive looking.
  • This video Carie created for her son’s first birthday is SO CUTE. Makes me think maybe we should video more.
  • I definitely feel like this these days. I think because I live quite far away from many of my friends right now – or at least, far away when you have a buggy. I miss going out with them on week day evenings and getting a bit pissed and talking about all kinds of crap. It’s a new phase, where most of us are partnered up or with kids, and Whatsapp is great for keeping in touch, but not quite the same, you know? Everyone’s just so busy all the time. Finding time to spend together is getting harder and harder as we get older. And it looks like I’m not the only one feeling this way.
  • This post kind of ties into my last newsletter. You don’t need to instagram your washing up. Instagram is meant to be a place for beautiful things, but I still think it’s good to inject a dose of reality in there every now and again!
  • Charlotte and Katy’s Styling the Seasons challenge is already a year old! I literally never take part in this because I’m too disorganised to remember to do it, but I definitely enjoy the photos on Instagram each month. So many beautiful images.
  • Why women need to stop working for free. There are a lot of conversations taking place in the blog world right now that are very similar to this. Blogger outreach is so often seen as a publicity function within companies, and there often isn’t a budget to work with us. I know I’ve done a couple of things so far, and haven’t been paid for them. My blog is not enormous, and I’ve seen these pieces kind of like doing a free internship to build up a portfolio to show future prospective clients. But should I be asking for a budget now? Is it worth losing opportunities because you won’t work for free? I never really know what to do with these things. I would love to know your thoughts.
  • Speaking of sponsored posts, the stuff Argos have been doing with bloggers lately has been really innovative. I’m not sure if it’s in house or by an agency, but they’ve really nailed their blogger marketing. This sponsorship is subtle, but connects them to a gorgeous looking dinner party (seriously, Siobhan is such a great photographer). And I loved the challenge they set three bloggers to restyle empty rooms using Argos product. How great are these shelves? I never would have thought they had such nice stuff.
  • I thought this Cath Kidston video, using three bloggers and their kids, was also really nicely done.
  • This ox cheek recipe was LUSH.
  • 50 healthy meals to make in 20 minutes
  • Have you come across Pinch Toys yet? I started following them on Instagram thanks to a competition they were running (which I didn’t realise had already closed, oops!) and their stuff is gorgeous! Not that we need any more toys around this house…
