Cooking the books: A Modern Way to Eat
An ex-colleague of mine kept raving about A Modern Way to Eat at the beginning of 2014. It looked interesting, but I’d never heard of Anna Jones and I wasn’t really on the lookout for a new cookbook. I have so many, and I rarely cook from them, so did I REALLY need another one? Especially a vegetarian cookbook, as Peter isn’t usually that keen.
But then I kept hearing about it last year. It cropped up in every “Best cookery books of the year” roundup that I read. Another friend told me it was one of the best books she’d bought.
“Fine!” I thought, “I’ll ask for it for Christmas.”
So I did.
But did anyone get it for me? No they didn’t. And I was really disappointed, so that was my sign that I should just buy the bloody thing! So I did and I’m so glad I did. There are so many recipes in here I want to cook. I’ve marked up the ones I want to make straight way (does anyone else do that the instant they get a new cook book? I know I should have made it look pretty with some folded washi tape or something, but I was just too excited, so torn up post it note will have to do!), but I can actually see myself making the majority of recipes over time, something I don’t know if I can say about any other book on my shelves!
I should say here that apparently part of the publishing company I work for released this book, but I didn’t know that when I bought it, so this review is definitely not biased by finding that out.
So far, I’ve made the Eldeflower and Pistachio cake, pictured (how good does that look, by the way? I was sooooo proud of how it turned out), and the Sweet Potato, Ricotta and Thyme Bake. Both were incredible, and really different tasting. Next on the list is the Lemony Lentil and Crispy Kale soup. Doesn’t that sound amazing? I can’t wait to make it! Nothing is overly complicated, there don’t seem to be too many hard to find ingredients or fancy steps, so it’s perfect for where I am right now in terms of life with baby Theo.
